Founded in 1807, Kharkiv University Natural History Museum is among the oldest university museums in Ukraine. Having started as the Natural History Exhibition headed by professor F.o. Delyavin, it became а museum due to significant scientific contributions made by professors I.a. Krynytsky, A.m. Nikolsky, V.n.grubant, L.v.korabelnykov.
The stock of exhibits was substantially enlarged by various people who presented their private collections to the Museum, among them Councillor of State D.a. Donets-zaharzhevsky; professors V.m. Arnoldi, A.b. Felnam. Among the most active contributors to the foundation of the Museum were zoologists of the University School of Biology: professor I.b. Volchanetsky, associate professors O.d. Maslovsky, O.o.lisetsky and others.
At present the 23 halls of the Museum house about 250,000 exhibits of invertebrate animals, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals. The Museum is а wonderful facility for scientific and academic work: classes in zoology, evolution theory and other subjects are conducted there. The Museum is also an educational and information centre of environmental conservation. The Museum is annually visited by 20,000 excursionists.
The Museum maintains close scientific cooperation with numerous museums and zoological parks of the world.
